BENGALURU: A 34-year-old unemployed man from Mahadevapura lost Rs 17 lakh to cybercriminals, who approached him recently in the guise of representatives of a dating site. The fraudsters asked him to register with them to earn money even while he had fun.Madan (name changed), working with a private firm earlier, was unemployed for more than a year.According to police, he was cheated by the miscreants between February 23 and June 18. He delayed complaining to avoid embarrassment and finally went to police on his friendsâ advice.Madan told police an unknown miscreant called him over phone in February and introduced himself as a representative of a dating site. âThe stranger told me I would be sent as an escort with women seeking such service and I could earn good money even while having some fun, if I register with the site. I agreed to the offer. Later, he demanded money in the name of various charges, including call verification, green card privacy, profile verification, dating agreement charges, ID charges,â Madan stated in his complaint.Madan said he transferred Rs 16,96,396 to bank accounts provided by the suspect. Based on the complaint, Whitefield CEN Crime police registered a case of cheating and cybercrime against unknown miscreants.
