Pune: A goldsmith, arrested by the Pune police in a Rs21 lakh cheating case, escaped from the Howrah-Pune Duranto express train near Nagpur on Friday afternoon.A team of Faraskhana police had arrested Sanjay Jana, the goldsmiths, and his accomplice, Saurabh Maiti, from their houses in West Bengal and were bringing them to Pune. As the train approached Nagpur, Jana told the police escort team that he wanted to use the washroom. He went there but did not come out for quite some time. In between, the train had slowed on its approach to the station.The police team, after repeatedly calling him, broke the washroom door. They found the window glass broken and Jana missing. A complaint was lodged with the Government Railway Police in Nagpur.Senior inspector Dadasheb Chudappa of the Faraskhana police said, “A city jeweller had lodged a complaint accusing Jana and Maiti of running away with 308gms of gold worth Rs21 lakh which he had given them for ornament making. A case of criminal breach of trust and cheating was registered on May 6.”
