A greater use of drones draws the governor to the western front

Chandigarh: Punjab governor Banwarilal Purohit on Wednesday visited the state’s border areas to review why drone intrusions, infiltration, and drug smuggling from Pakistan had increased.This is his fourth border visit in one year and he started it from Dharamkot Randhawa near Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district. He tried to assess security, understand the landscape, and lift the morale of the border villagers. He interacted with the security agencies, local authorities, and community representatives and briefed them about their role in protecting the border and reporting intrusions. He said: “We need the community to collaborate with the law enforcement agencies.”Chief secretary V K Janjua and director general of police (DGP) Gourav Yadav escorted him to several key locations of border surveillance equipment. The district administration also organised a special camp under Mission Aabad (Absolute Border Area Development) at Dharamkot Randhawa village to let people have their official benefits. The governor met sarpanches, panches and officials from Amritsar and Tarn Taran at Guru Nanak Dev University.Reacting to the visit, Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the governor should function withing the constitutional framework.
