Police in Hinjewadi, Pune, have arrested a 35-year-old software engineer from Sus Road for allegedly posting his wife’s cellphone number on a website offering courtesan services. The suspect, who works at a Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park-based company, committed the crime to antagonize his 33-year-old wife. He is from Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh.On July 22, she filed a complaint with the Hinjewadi police station against unidentified individuals for posting her cellphone number and other details on a website, after which she began receiving explicit calls from strangers. Under the provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act of 2000, a case was filed against the anonymous individuals. The woman also works for a software company, according to senior police inspector Arun Waykar of the Hinjewadi police station.Police obtained information about the website and began searching for the internet protocol (IP) address of the computer or electronic device used to upload her information. “A few days later, we received the IP address of the device. We visited the location where the IP address was registered and found that it was the same residential address provided by the victim in her complaint. We later discovered that the information was uploaded from a tablet belonging to her husband,” he said. During interrogation, the suspect admitted that he had uploaded his wife’s cellphone number and other information on the escort service’s website. “He told us that his wife frequently picked fights with him, which frustrated him. In order to teach her a lesson, he uploaded her information to the website two months ago,” Waykar said. “The couple has been married for three years.”
