After fatalities of trekkers, physicians will now accompany climbers.

In the wake of several deaths of trekkers in Uttarakhand and other Himalayan states over the past two years, a prominent mountaineering authority will provide advanced training to physicians who will accompany climbers on high altitude trekking expeditions across the country. As part of an initiative by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, the month-long training program will begin in Uttarkashi during the first week of December. The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi will teach at least fifty physicians advanced mountaineering techniques. Due to a paucity of aadvanced climbing skillsa, medical personnel who were previously a part of an expedition remained at the base camp. After this exercise, however, they would be able to accompany the ascent. Chief of the Mountaineering and Trekking Association in Uttarkashi, Jayendra Rana, stated on Wednesday that due to the high risk of accidents, mountaineering authorities have mandated the inclusion of a medical officer on expedition teams, who can administer basic care to climbers and other support staff in the event of an emergency. According to him, the initiative will make climbing expeditions safer for climbers.Read this story in Bengali
