BJP candidate in Dinhata hears “go back” chants

Jalpaiguri: Alleged Trinamool Congress supporters yelled “go back” at BJP candidate for Dinhata Ashok Mandal when he was campaigning in Nayarhat on Tuesday morning. The BJP’s Natabari MLA Mihir Goswami and Mandal were surrounded by hecklers who compelled them to end the day’s program. ‘They (Trinamool) are not letting us run our bypoll campaign. This demonstrates how anti-democratic the state’s dominant party is. We have reported two FIRs to the Dinhata police station and made a complaint to the Election Commission. According to Malati Rava Roy, the BJP’s Cooch Behar district president, “We have named Trinamool leaders involved in attacking our candidate.” Tuesday’s episode was a replay of what transpired at Bamanhat Bazaar the day before. Trinamool leaders denied the accusations, but police had to step in and escort the BJP representatives out of the market area on Monday. They said that villagers were not letting Mandal campaign because they were angry about the byelection being forced upon them by BJP MP Nisith Pramanik, who resigned as an MLA after winning the seat to keep his place in the House of Representatives. A top Trinamool leader claimed, “BJP is leveling accusations against us because it knows it will lose the bypoll.” Some Rajbanshi community members in which Mandal has influence have reacted angrily to the heckling of Mandal.
