Boy’s plight makes hospital staff feel good

KOCHI: Police protection granted to her is affecting her professional and social life and should be curtailed to occasions where it is really necessary, the victim in Paravoor sex racket case has demanded before the Kerala High Court. Police personnel assigned to her are escorting her all the time and this is making it impossible to attend the government job she got as well as for pursuing studies, the victim who is presently staying at a government orphanage for girls has complained. The petitioner who was a minor was sexually abused by as many as 150 persons in 2010 in connivance with her parents. Police had registered over 50 cases in relation to the sex racket. Her parents were convicted by the court in the cases. She has been staying at the government orphanage since March 9, 2011. In the plea filed to the high court, the victim points out that her school education got disrupted due to threats associated with the case and other aspects related to the trials in cases. However, she could complete graduation by enrolling as a private student due to the support of the authorities and gain employment as a clerk in a government project. Three police personnel, including two women constables, are assigned for her protection. They come along with her to her workplace at Kakkanad and stay there while she is engaged in work. Police is also escorting her when she is going for tuition on Sundays. Her identity gets revealed due to the presence of police at the workplace and visitors come to the office as if to see a rare species. Wherever she goes, people are finding it easy to identify her as a victim of a sex racket due to the presence of police personnel, the victim complained. The victim claims she is not able to given attention to her work or studies due to the mental tension created by such social existence. Therefore, the police protection should be limited to occasions where it is really necessary and she should be allowed to travel like any other girl, the victim demands. Considering the petition during admission hearing, a bench comprising justices TR Ramachandran Nair and PB Suresh Kumar has asked the state government to produce the court’s earlier order to provide police protection to the victim. The order should be produced by May 20th, the court has directed.
