On Thursday, police in New Delhi said that two persons had been detained in the Laxmi Nagar neighborhood of the city’s East District for being in possession of counterfeit cash with a face value of around Rs 62 lakh. Azad Singh, 48, a resident of Escort Colony in Greater Noida, was one of the suspects arrested on Wednesday near the Laxmi Nagar Metro Station thanks to a tip. Later, a local man named Ezaz Ahmad, 45, was also taken into custody, according to a senior police official. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Priyanka Kashyap stated that two bags and a pollybag holding old currency notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denominations were found from them. The bills’ combined face value is 61,97,000. The accused individuals allegedly told police that they paid Rs 10 lakh in new currency notes to buy the old notes. According to the police, teams from the Special Staff, Special Cell, Intelligence Bureau, and Special Branch were convened for a combined questioning to investigate any criminal activity or other possible explanations. The Specified Bank Notes (Classification of Liabilities) Act-2017 has been used to commence legal proceedings against the two, the DCP added. She said that the matter has been reported to the Income Tax department, the Enforcement Directorate, and the RBI.
