Deshmukh, Malik move HC seeking relief to vote

Anil Deshmukh, a convicted former state home minister, petitioned the Bombay high court on Monday for permission to walk out of prison on parole bond for a day or under escort to vote in the June 20 Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections. His attorney presented his petition to Justice N.J. Jamadar, who scheduled a hearing for Wednesday. In his parole application in a money-laundering case, Deshmukh submitted an interim plea requesting release to vote in the MLC elections. Deshmukh and incarcerated cabinet minister Nawab Malik were both denied permission by the special PMLA court to vote in the Rajya Sabha election held on June 10. Malik on Monday also moved the HC with a petition to amend his petition filed last week when he sought permission to go and cast his vote for RS polls, a day after the special PMLA court denied him permission. His attorneys Rohan Dakshini and Kushal Mor requested a “substantial amendment” to that petition so that he could vote in MLC elections. Justice Naik denied the request to asubstantiallya amend his earlier petition to vote in MLC elections and ordered him to submit a new petition. Justice Naik permitted Malika’s attorney to withdraw his petition, and he then petitioned the bench of Justice Bharati Dangrea to have a new petition for a daya’s release or voting under escort paired with Deshmukha’s for a Wednesday hearing. She requested that his attorneys return on Tuesday. a€”Swati Deshpande
