INLD and the Congress, two opposition parties, mounted a protest inside the Haryana assembly on Tuesday. On the final day of the Haryana assembly’s session, which was adjourned sine die, their MLAs were escorted out for interrupting the House proceedings with the concerns of a power spike and an alleged scam in the procurement of paddy. Speaker of the House was compelled by Congress MLAs to adjourn the House twice for periods of 20 and 15 minutes, respectively. Strong protests from the Congress to raise the matter of alleged fraud in paddy procurement were heard as the proceedings got underway. After spending more than two hours on Monday discussing the issue, the demonstration was held. The Congress MLAs were miffed when the BJP-led state administration declined to request a judicial investigation into the situation. With the exception of former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, all lawmakers entered the House well and chanted against the speaker and the administration while being led by Congress legislature party leader Kiran Choudhry. Santosh Sarwan, who was acting as speaker, identified them as those who were raising slogans before marshals led them out of the House. Hooda afterwards staged a walkout and charged that the BJP in power was muzzling his or her voice. The former CM remarked, “The ruling party is trying to suppress our voice due to our smaller numbers. They may suppress our voice here, but they cannot do so outside the assembly.” Following then, INLD lawmakers rose from their seats and asked the speaker to permit a discussion over rising electricity tariff rates. They requested that the speaker decide on the call attention motion that they had made, but the speaker rejected their request, claiming that the matter had no bearing on the government because the Haryana State Electricity Regulatory Commission controlled the independent businesses that provided and billed for the electricity. Outraged by this, INLD MLAs invaded the House well and began shouting insults at the speaker and the administration. Abhay Singh Chautala, the opposition leader, had already requested that the speaker summon all of the Congress MLAs he had listed. Before requesting that his colleagues come back, Karan Singh Dalal, the lone Congress MLA present in the Assembly, asked CM Manohar Lal Khattar to guarantee an investigation into the paddy scam.
