KOLKATA: In order to improve services for travelers to and from Bangladesh, the railway ministry aims to improve the infrastructure at Kolkata Station, which serves as the terminal for the Bandhan Express, which travels up to Khulna, and the Maitree Express, which travels to Dhaka. Both a center for facilitating visas and a center for exchanging foreign currencies are proposed by the government. The BSF has been guarding the two international trains for the past few years, but starting on April 1 that responsibility will be transferred to the RPF. According to a Nabanna official, the home ministry and the Prime Minister’s office decided to have the BSF escort the trains to the border. Officials claimed many people from Bangladesh frequently wind up paying penalties for overstaying in India, hence it has been decided that a visa extension center would be established up at the station. The state government has been informed of the new decision that RPF personnel will provide security to the trains. An official stated that the BSF was given the task to escort the two trains after the jurisdiction of the BSF was extended up to 50km from the border in Bengal, despite Kolkata station not being within 50km of the border. Sheelendra Pratap Singh, DRM of Sealdah, said a tender has recently been floated to set up the foreign currency exchange center at the station. The railways had to pay the BSF a sizable price for escorting the trains, which is why security was switched from BSF to RPF.
