Former member of the Uttar Pradesh legislature (SP) Deepnarayan Singh Yadav has been detained for his role in an attempt to get a jailed criminal released.

Deepnarayan Singh Yadav, a two-time SP MLA from the Garotha constituency, was arrested on Monday for his role in plotting to free convicted gangster Lekhraj Yadav from police custody in Jhansi. Lekhraj, who has 60 criminal cases pending against him, is currently lodged in the Kannauj jail, where he is serving a life sentence for murder. They got into a fight with the cops to rile them up, divert their attention, and give Lekhraj a chance to get away. Police, however, remained alert and did not fall into the trap,” Bhaskar said. Lekhraj was whisked away to a safe location quickly by the cops, he said.ADG said another attempt was made by the same accused to free Lekhraj by trying to intercept the police van in which Lekhraj was being taken back to Kannauj later in the day using a white Scorpio (U BR 1100). However, since the cops along the entire route were put on high alert and backup force was rushed in, the attempt was foiled. On the basis of CCTV footage, police first zeroed in on the white Scorpio which was recovered from the house of Deepnarayan’s brother-in-law. It was subsequently established that Deepnarayan’s relative Anil Yadav was present at the crime scene on both the occasions when attempts were made to free Lekhraj. Police zeroed in on Deepnarayan, who has 51 cases pending against him including 8 in which he has been chargesheeted, after electronic evidence of his involvement in the crime surfaced during prove, the ADG said.DIG Jhansi range Jogendra Kumar said police raided the house of Deepnarayan early in the morning but did not find him. His son Moon Yadav was detained for questioning and on the basis of leads extracted from him, Deepnarayan was arrested. His son was let off thereafter. On the other hand, Deepnarayan told the media that he has been framed in the case as a political rivalry and denied having nothing to do with Lekhraj. Police debunked his allegations claiming to be in possession of electronic evidence which includes calls details and audio clips of some telephonic conversation. He was produced before the court on Monday and remanded to judicial custody. Police have also moved an application for his remand, which the court is slated to hear on Tuesday.
