The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued a contempt notice against the director general of police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav, the police commissioner of Ludhiana, Mandeep Singh Sidhu, and three other police commissionerate employees for failing to act on a complaint from a leader of a Hindu organization based in Ludhiana despite the court’s orders. Rishabh Kanojia, the leader of Shri Hindu Takht, had filed a petition alleging that on January 19, an ACP-ranked official had called to meet him at the Jalandhar bypass. The court had ordered the police to investigate the complaint and submit a report within 28 days. In order to transport him to the Punjab Police Academy (PPA) Phillaur, the ACP forced him to sit in a car. Kanojia had stated that after arriving at PPA, he was led to a room of a DIG-ranked official against whom he was already pursuing complaints. They were escorted by an official car of the Salem Tabri police station with at least six police officers. The officer beat him there and ordered him to rescind the complaint that had been brought against him. He had initially been terrified, but on March 2 he had made a police report in Ludhiana. The leader said the high court had issued a notice to the police commissioner on April 21 and directed him to make a reply in addition to disclosing CCTV video and the whereabouts of the officers’ cell phones in question because no action had been taken. The police did not intervene and did not submit a judicial response. As a result, he filed a contempt petition, and the DGP, police commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu, joint commissioner of police Saumya Mishra, additional deputy commissioner of police Rupinder Kaur Sra, and sub-inspector Kuldeep Singh, SHO, Daresi police station, have all received contempt notices from the court.
