Jamia may form a partnership with Holy Family and Escorts for medical school

NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia university may partner with nearby hospitals such as Holy Family Hospital and Escorts Heart Institute for its proposed medical college. The university is exploring multiple options before approaching hospitals with formal proposals. “Until we have our own hospital, we will attempt to form a partnership with nearby hospitals like Holy Family and Escorts,” said Jamia Vice Chancellor Talat Ahmad. In October 2014, the Supreme Court disapproved of Delhi government’s haste in acquiring and transferring disputed land in south Delhi to Jamia University. As a result, Jamia’s ambitious plan to establish a medical college-combined hospital suffered a setback. The title of the 114-acre property on which the proposed medical facility was to be constructed was called into question when the Uttar Pradesh government claimed ownership and possession. “We are awaiting the outcome of discussions between the Chief Ministers of Delhi and UP. The Supreme Court had asked the governments of the two states to come up with an amicable solution so Jamia as an institution can benefit from the land that is locked within the varsity’s premises from both sides. “As soon as we resolve the issue, we will start working out the details and approaching the hospitals with formal proposals,” Ahmad said.
