PONDA: According to Irwin Soares, chairman of the Ponda Carnival committee, an unusual Ukrainian escort for King Momo and a unique all-female band will add glitz to the Ponda Carnival parade on Sunday. Tiatrs, “khell tiatrs,” live band performances, and folk dance competitions for college students are all part of the entertainment schedule that will run through Tuesday. The Sunday float procession, which will be led through the streets by King Momo Darshan Fernandes, a native of Yashwantnagar-Ponda, will be the primary event of the celebrations. Starting from Upper Bazaar, the float parade will travel via Kaziwada, Mount Carmel Chapel, Ponda Municipal Council, and finally disperse at Tisk-Ponda. In addition to the main event in Ponda, Soares announced that there would be theater performances in Mardol, Opa-Khandepar, and Bandora. Dominic Rodrigues, of Panchwadi-Shiroda, has been picked by the organizers to serve as King Momo and lead the Shiroda Carnival float parade on Monday as the Shiroda constituency has been celebrating its exclusive Carnival festivities since last year. Mahadev Naik, the local MLA and head of the Carnival committee, announced that the float procession in Shiroda would start close to the police outpost and terminate at Shiroda Bazaar. Since the carnival takes place at the village level, Naik continued, “We encouraged the neighborhood residents to take part in the procession and the celebration committee has resolved to pay 15, 000 to all ward-wise groups of revelers from the village, to encourage their efforts.
