Priyanka’s escort car was struck by a police jeep.

LUCKNOW: An escort vehicle in Priyanka Gandhi’s cavalcade was hit by a UP police jeep in Amethi on Saturday when she was on her way to the Fursatganj air strip to leave for Delhi. The green Qualis hit was the same vehicle which Priyanka drove on Friday with brother Rahul on her side. However, at the time of the accident, she was in a bullet proof vehicle ahead of the one hit by the police jeep. The two vehicles were damaged in the accident but nobody was injured.The brother-sister duo had come to Amethi to take part in the meetings of the women Self Help Groups formed by the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust. Priyanka and Rahul are trustees of the trust. While Rahul, MP from Amethi, left on Friday itself, Priyanka stayed back to attend the marriage ceremony of the son of an employee working for her husband Robert Vadera. On Saturday, Robert also came down to Amethi and the couple attended the wedding later.Priyanka also visited Rae Bareli on Saturday to take part in meetings of the SHGs. She addressed several meetings, heard the problems of the women and offered solutions. Over one lakh women in Rae Bareli and Amethi are associated with SHGs. These groups get monetary assistance from the Trust to create employment opportunities for women and their families besides providing them medical insurance and help in improving their living condition.The accident occurred when Priyanka’s cavalcade was leaving the guest house of Sanjay Gandhi hospital in Munshiganj where she stayed overnight. Akhilesh Singh, UP Congress spokesman, said that a woman onlooker came in front of the green Qualis, as a result the driver had to apply emergency breaks. The driver in the police jeep failed to react spontaneously and hit the vehicle ahead. It caused damages to both the vehicles but did not affect the movement of the cavalcade.
