Punjab’s new chief minister has a history with the Chautalas family.

ROHTAK: Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi, sworn in as chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab on Thursday, has an old connection with the Chautala political family since the time of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal. Former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala had gifted him a murrah buffalo, an Escorts tractor, and a ‘jalebi’ from a popular Gohana shop on his last visit to the state in 2004.Floored by the Chautalas’ hospitality, Elahi had wished for India and Pakistan to relax their visa norms to promote cross-border bonhomie. He had stayed at Chautala’s Teja Khera farmhouse in Sirsa and the then CM had accompanied his entourage. In 2018, Ellenabad MLA Abhay Singh Chautala, the younger son of Chautala, was invited to a wedding in the Elahi family, where he was treated like a family member. So, the sweet relation continued to Devi Lal’s grandson.A supporter of Abhay’s Indian National Lok Dal said, “Whenever the Chautalas go to Pakistan, the Ellahi family receives them at the border and hosts them. When Elahi was the CM of Pakistani Punjab last from 2002 to 2007, Om Prakash Chautala was Haryana CM till 2005. Haryanvi entertainer Jagbir Rathee recalled how he had accompanied the then CM to Pakistan in 2005 with the gifts of a tractor, a motorcycle, and a buffalo.Rathee, who was director of the Haryana Cultural Society in 2004, recalled that: “When Chautala reached Pakistan, Pervaiz Elahi tied a turban to his head and welcomed him like family. Both political families have had close relations ever since and spare time to visit each in both good and bad times.”
