Seven Delhi police officers escorting two defendants remained spectators, according to UP police, which plans to file a FIR against them.

BIJNOR: Seven personnel of Delhi police escorting two undertrials in Bijnor court remained “spectators” to the entire shooting and didnât fire a single shot, UP police said on Wednesday, as it planned filing a FIR against them. One of the undertrials, Shahnawaz, was gunned down while the other, Jabbar Ahmad, escaped from the clutches of Delhi police after three youths opened fire inside the courtroom as the judge was winding up the proceedings on Tuesday afternoon. Two personnel of UP police, who were present in the courtroom, were injured while trying to stop the attackers. On Wednesday, 17 UP policemen were suspended for alleged security lapse. But, soon after the action from its brass, local police raised questions about the role played by the Delhi policemen, responsible for escorting the two undertrials. Both the criminals were arrested in October by Delhi police in connection with a separate criminal case, five months after they were named in the murders of BSP leader Ehsaan Ahmad and his nephew.Bijnorâs superintendent of police (SP) Sanjeev Tyagi said, “Shahnawaz and Jabbar were in the custody of Delhi police, which had brought the two accused for hearing in Bijnorâs chief judicial magistrate court. Hence, it was their responsibility and not ours. Seven jawans of Delhi police just saw the entire shooting while our constables were putting their lives at risk to save both the accused and people present in the court.”Tyagi further said, “The apathetic attitude of Delhi police commandos and personnel present inside and outside the court can be gauged from the fact that Jabbar, who had no gun, escaped easily from their custody, while Shahnawaz was gunned down. I have written a letter to the top authority of Delhi police. I am mulling filing a FIR against security personnel of Delhi police.” “We have formed six teams to nab Jabbar. Combing operation is on. I hope he will be arrested soon,” he said, adding that a case has been registered against Jabbar for fleeing from the court. While all the three attackers were also booked for murder and sent to jail. There is still no clarity on age of the two attackers. The third one, Sumit, is adult and has been twice to jail for murders. “He (Sumit) is facing several criminal cases in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli and was hired by the slain BSP leaderâs son to carry out the attack,” said SP city, Lakshmi Nivas Mishra.Meanwhile, postmortem report of Shahnawaz revealed that the attackers pumped 11 bullets into his body. Police recovered three .30 mm pistols, seven live cartridges and Rs 6,260 from the assailants. 15 used cartridges were found inside the courtroom.
