MUMBAI: A 29-year-old man got into a first-class ladies compartment of a Harbour line train and exposed himself to an advertising executive travelling alone. There were no police personnel in the compartment even days after the state announced that it would provide Home Guards to supplement night escorting duty, which is being handled solely by the Government Railway Police. The man had also allegedly tried to touch the 27-year-old victim, who resides in Sanpada. She was travelling from Kurla to Vashi around 10.30pm on Monday. There were no other woman commuters in the compartment. “The accused, Solomon Robert, boarded the coach in Govandi. He sat down at the entrance and so the victim couldn’t spot him. As the train approached Vashi, she got up to stand near the door. She saw Solomon unzipping his trousers and raised an alarm,” a GRP official said. As the victim tried to get off at the station, patrolling policemen caught Solomon before he could flee. Officials said he is unemployed and resides in Vashi. Solomon was booked under IPC sections 354 and 509 (see box). He was produced before a railway court and remanded in police custody for five days. “The first-class compartment, in which the victim was travelling, isn’t escorted by the GRP due to shortage of manpower. We are waiting for the home guards to join us,” the official said.
