Voting day brings an early hearing for Nawab Malik, led by NCP officials, before the Bombay High Court.

The NCP’s Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Malik, who were barred from leaving jail to vote in Friday’s Rajya Sabha elections, hurried to the Bombay high court on Thursday demanding immediate relief. On Thursday night, Malik’s lawyers Tariq Sayed and Kushal Mor requested an emergency hearing with Justice P D Naik. Sayed asked that it be heard “first on board” because the crucial election would end at 4.30pm, and Justice Naik said orally, “either he should be released on bail or allowed to go under police escort.ââ He also said, “I will hear you on Friday at 10.30am.” The petition was filed by Deshmukh’s legal team, which included advocates Inderpal Singh and Aniket Nikam, but was not mentioned before any bench on Thursday.Malik’s petition asks the HC to “set aside the June 9 order of the special PMLA court and release him on personal bond with suretiesââ with terms and conditions to enable him to vote in the biennial elections and thus exercise his constitutional right. He requested that police accompany him from Mumbai Central jail to the voting booth in the Vidhan Bhavan and back again on election day.
