Three individuals, including a 19-year-old boy, were given a second chance at life thanks to organs donated by the family of a 55-year-old lady who tragically passed away from her injuries. This is the second organ donation to take place at AIIMS in the last week. The mother went on a stroll in the hamlet of Dera, where she resided, on August 27 after hearing about a 16-month-old kid who became the youngest organ donor in the nation’s capital the previous week. But others saw her unconscious on the road and called her husband. After suffering a serious head injury, she was taken to the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre. After she suffered brain stem death on August 29, a group of specialists and transplant coordinators from the Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO) discussed organ donation with her family. âEarlier, when my mother died in an accident, I gave one organ. Kishan, the donor’s son-in-law, stated, “Today I told my in-laws to go for organ donation.” A 9.2 km long green corridor was built from AIIMS to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in Okhla, which allowed for the safe and efficient delivery of the live heart in only 14 minutes during rush hour. After suffering from heart problems for almost a year and a half, a 19-year-old kid received a donated heart from a 55-year-old lady. His health had deteriorated to a severe point, and he had been taking medication ever since. FEHI performed the heart transplant surgery.âORBO, AIIMS routinely hosts a variety of IEC programs with the goal of raising public awareness about organ donation. Donating and transplanting organs is difficult work since every second counts. Dr. Aarti Vij, who heads up the unit, explains that many people are engaged at various points in the process, including treating doctors, transplant coordinators, the OT team, the forensics department, and organ retrieval teams.
